at the bottom of the ocean, anyone would drown

i. overlooking the pier

The ocean is a powerful being, and when you look off into the horizon, the blue meets the sky and seems to exist forever. The end is not simply tangible. You may touch its end on your own shore, but what lies thousands of miles out and meters deep may be beyond your realm of imagination. As you look off the pier with the breeze bursting around you, you're left to wonder what occurs beneath the sea and into the distance.

ii. damsel in distress

In the sea, schools of fish add a myriad of colors amongst the blue. A rhythmic cell based on the calls of damselfish develops and weaves through the water. Schools of fish swim in harmony, following one another rather than a single leader. Despite crossing paths with other schools and species, you watch as the damselfish instantly adjust to one another as they continue on their journey.

iii. whale watching

If you are lucky, you may see a whale. Even better, you may hear its calls when they fall within the threshold of your hearing. If you are unlucky, you hear the calls of distress. You watch as the majestic mammal is poached and heaved onto a ship.

iv. baggage

The whaling may have already occurred, but the pollution remains. You notice as the plastic bags, the can rings, the bottles, and the garbage float atop the waves and make their way to where you remain on the pier a thousand feet from the shore.

v. pink and orange

As the sun sets in the horizon, casting the sky a mixture of pink and orange that reflects on the water miles away from your perch, you're left to wonder what it all means: the water, the life, the whaling, the pollution, and the environment surrounding you. What have you done to it?
