Highjinks! began its life as the third movement of my Sinfonietta from 2024. The more I lived with that piece the more I realized that the third movement was clearly the best of the three and had the potential to be a fine piece in its own right. In summer 2026 I decided it was time to revisit the movement and expand its orchestration. I rebranded the piece Highjinks! (although I considered both Tongue-In-Cheek and Tomfoolery) due to its boisterous and mischievous character. In addition to giving it a new title I also expanded the orchestration by adding piccolo, trombones, tuba, and three additional percussion parts. The result is a short, colorful, and exuberant celebration that refuses to take itself too seriously.
