SUMMA#02 for 2 alto flutes and electronics is the second part of a cycle of instrumental duos that explores the idea of unity and, in contrast, that of divergence. In SUMMA, the duo is conceived either as two instruments converging into one, or as a single instrument that barely diverges. This aspect is further enhanced through the use of electronics.
The scale used in SUMMA#02 carries potentially many dangerous associations for the piece’s purpose, yet its systematic repetition allows it to be stripped of them and transformed into an empty signifier — much like endlessly repeating a word — while remaining such a recognizable icon that even the slightest change in the flutes can be unmistakably perceived. I am drawn to transparent scenarios where each element has its own space and focus of attention.
The entire cycle can be performed successively and without separation between works (SUMMA#01, SUMMA#02, SUMMA#03, etc.).
