The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood of Great Renown in Nottinghamshire is an1883 adaptation and compilation of medieval ballads related to the legendary character ofRobin Hood. It was written by Howard Pyle as a collection of these ballads told inchronological order, from the origins of Robin Hood, to his death. Many of these balladsare unused in most media that represent Robin Hood, and are unknown even to avidreaders. This first vignette includes the ballads of Robin Hood’s origin as an outlaw andhis recruitment of Little John. This vignette will be part of a larger operatic work thatallows it to either be performed by itself as a self-contained story (like a ballad) or incombination with subsequent vignettes (like Pyle’s adaptation). This opera is composed with the goal of accessibility to amateur andyoung/emerging professional singers. The target audience is primarily first timeopera-goers, although I hope it can be entertaining to even opera fanatics.)
