Celestial Variations, by Alexandre F. Travassos, for alto saxophone and piano were commissioned by saxophonist Rafael Migliani in 2018 and premiered on the same year with pianist Cris Bloes. The work was inspired by the human fascination on the simple act of observing the sky. The theme and its seven variations, picture different impressions depending on the moment of the day, meteorological conditions, colours, cloud formations, always in constant change. Using a modal writing and fourth chords, the composer wanted to highlight the vague and inconstant character of one of the most surprising visions for men.
