Sinfonietta №1

Sinfonietta "Dictatorship" traces the arc from oppressive force to liberation. The first movement introduces a bright, aspirational theme that is gradually crushed by a clumsy yet deceitful counter-theme accompanied by short chords evoking marching boots. The second movement unfolds under a low, obsessive contrabass drone, monotonous and menacing. Above it, cello staccato arpeggios creep with a scraping, claw-like quality. The violins carry a melody that is inherently bright, but against this accompaniment it takes on an undertone of despair and bitterness. The finale bursts forth with sweeping arpeggios — fresh wind, new ideas — leading to a triumphant fortissimo major victory: the end of the dictatorship.
