SUMMA#01 I for trombone, baritone saxophone, and electronics, by Barcelona-based composer Luis Codera Puzo, is the first part of a cycle of instrumental duets that explores the idea of unity and, in contrast, divergence. The recent music of the Catalan musician is characterized by the economical use of elements, a tendency toward sobriety that often employs resources such as unison and transparent textures, without accumulations or overlaps. In the SUMMA cycle, this essentialist approach is taken to the extreme by developing musical ideas that emerge from the balance of conceiving the duet as two instruments converging into one, or as a single instrument that barely diverges. SUMMA#01 presents also a use of electronics that challenges this dynamic of convergence and divergence. Starting from common points shared by the two acoustic instruments, the electronic part diverges from them to propose specific situations in which it eclipses, engulfs, and practically ignores the musical discourse of the instruments. This almost foreign conception of electronics thus proposes a third type of relationship besides unity and separation: the absence of a relationship.
