Tolstoy wrote his "Confession" between 1879 and 1880. In this work, he expressed deep cynicism and melancholy about the intellectual elite, bourgeois culture, the Russian Orthodox Church, and his recurring bouts of depression, which were coupled with creative stagnation. The piece explores Tolstoy’s thoughts on these themes.
This is the first movement of a larger work which includes St. Augustines "Confessions".
