- While working on 'Be Still My Soul', I came across the story about how 'It Is Well With My Soul' came to be. If the story is accurate, the author of the lyrics, Horatio Spafford, sent his family over seas while he stayed behind in the states. The ship his family was on sank and his children drowned at sea. Horatio found out when he received a telegram from his wife. When the ship Horatio was on passed over the area his children had drowned, he penned the words to this beloved hymn. As such, I felt the music needed more emotion. I'm not sure I would be well if this had happened to me. I can only imagine the pain and anguish that comes with losing all your children. It would take quite an emotional journey for me to get to the point where I could say, 'It Is Well With My Soul'. Liberal use of the pedal is encouraged along with great emotion. There is room for repeating material and extending the piece out a bit. That will have to come later as my composing may come to end for the year. Excited to see what the new year will bring! Blessings to you all along this journey called 'Life'.
