- “Broken Rules of Robotics” is an homage to
Capcom’s “Megaman” video game series.
These video games had a large impact on me
growing up and I have always been drawn to
their musical style. I wanted to bring my love
for these games to a concert setting by mixing
concert instruments and the audio channels
found in the video game consoles of the time
period.
“Broken Rules of Robotics” is written for two
violins, cello, and five Gameboy channels using
the three usual audios: Duty, Wave, and Noise.
Each channel must be written as a single line in
the score, and cannot contain any chords or
polyphony. The Megaman video games each use
the same gaming formula. The main character
must defeat eight “Robot Masters”, who
characterize an element or theme. After
defeating each Robot Master on their respective
stage, your character gains the defeated
opponent’s special ability, which will aid you in
taking down the next Robot Master. There is
usually an order in which you must defeat the
Robot Masters, with each Master having a
weakness to another Master’s ability. It is up to
the player to use logic or guesswork to find the
sequence of Robot Masters to defeat.
