Program Notes
Sagittarius A* is named after the black hole in the center of the Milky Way. The piece draws from a dream I had when I was young: a whimsical imagining of what it might’ve been like to play a role in the creation of the universe. To capture this whimsy, I chose to render the score in colored pencil and include graphic elements—mirroring my dream by inviting the players to take part in the creation of the music themselves.
Recording Notes
Brain Pocket is Jimmy Stagnitti, Olivia Cirisan and Ancel Neeley; three percussionists who met during their degrees at the University of Michigan. Our mission as an ensemble is to provide a space for education, collaboration, and communication with student composers who seek to write for and learn more about a historically young chamber ensemble instrumentation. Over the course of the 2023-2024 school year we engaged in a year-long collaborative project between the percussion and composition departments at SMTD. Beginning with a call for scores in the Fall, a collection of seven new pieces for percussion trio were created, five of which were premiered at our inaugural concert in April 2024. At the same time, these five new works were staged and filmed at the Duderstadt Video Studio. Premiered on 4/24/2024 at the University of Michigan.
