- Program Notes
- Blind shadows is an expressive duo that explores the musical concepts of duality and illusion. The piece is inspired by the idea of shadows cast by objects without a clear source of light, resulting in an image that is both present and elusive at the same time. The viola and cello engage in a series of different sonorities and textures, yielding sounds that are ethereal and airy in nature, yet still beautiful. These sonorities represent the intangibility of the shadows, which evoke feelings of floating and suspense in air. Much of the time it seems as if the two instruments are imitating each other, almost like a mirror image of themselves. This represents the duality of the shadows, which are created by both the object and the absence of light. The viola and cello often move in tandem with one another, creating a sense of unity and harmony while also highlighting their differences: how they are blind to the individual shadows they cast against each other.
