- Program Notes
- Inspired by the Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake, a tech-creators in fabric, this piece will
transform the idea of his fabric pleats into my music. Miyake's pleats, developed in the 1980s,
provide beauty and flexibility to extremely light polyester fabric. By studying Miyake's
techniques, I composed four pieces that translated the ideas from pleated fibers into music.
Stamp is the concluding work of this project, developed from the three concepts explored in the
first piece: timbral arpeggio, pitch sculpture, and rhythmic chips. In Stamp, I use the word
"stamp" to refer to the permanent pleats on fabric and a stamp on my musical language, in which
the three concepts become tools for composition.
In Stamp, the three concepts overlap and are more deeply connected to each other than in the
previous piece. They are utilized as compositional tools in subsequent works, and their
integration adds layers of complexity and meaning to the music. Ultimately, the piece aims to
create a permanent sonic image of the pleats' temporary movement, offering a unique perspective
on Miyake's innovative pleating techniques.
