- Program Notes
- This work developed from a sketch performed at a festival in Hamburg, 2011, where the theme was Edgar Allen Poe's 1841 short story, "A Descent into the Maelström." The music is in traditional sonata form, reflecting Poe's voyage-and-return structure. The music, however, stems from the Bohlen–Pierce scale, played by custom-made clarinets and guitar. Harmonic language is designed such that successive chords in the exposition sink in a repeating cycle, as a metaphor for the narrator of Poe's story, whose ship is caught in a whirlpool and is being slowly sucked to the bottom of the sea.
