Program Notes
A Time of Hope was written to highlight different percussion instruments’ timbres, thus using a mix of both pitched and unpitched percussion. The piece starts off with the hit of a small gong, slowly bringing other instruments to the mix. The music is focused around the tonal center of D and centers on simple rhythms, but as the piece progresses, more notes are added and the rhythms get more complicated. There is a brief section that is in B major, allowing for contrast before the piece comes back and ultimately finishes in D major.
