Program Notes
Sacred Embers was originally the middle movement of the last piece I wrote during my master’s degree, a three movement suite for saxophone ensemble entitled Phoenix Reborn. This larger work detailed the life cycle of the mythical Phoenix, beginning with its gnarly demise, to its cautious reawakening, and culminating in its inspiring ascent into the sky, only to continue repeating this cycle for eternity. Sacred Embers therefore outlines this rebirth chapter of the Phoenix’s life, patiently recreating the legendary bird from a pile of ashes. This piece is reflective and somber, but becomes more uplifting and grand as the Phoenix completes its revival.
