- Program Notes
- This duo for Soprano and Flute was written for Sydeboob, a contemporary music duo currently in residence at Carnegie Mellon. The title is taken from the opening to Allen Ginsberg's poem Howl. In this title I saw two musical roles to fulfill. The first is a calm organic flow in the sound, as one sees in a night sky. However the machinery of this night is also represented. As both a vocalist and flutist rely on breath to produce sound, I treated the duo as a sort of “macro-instrument”, two parts of a unified musical “machine”. In this I hope to present a gentle music flow that feels natural but establishes patterns when examined closely.
