Program Notes
“Morning Fanfare” for Brass Quintet was composed in 2010 while I was a student at Belmont University. It was my first time writing anything for Brass Quintet and I wanted to explore the quintessential sounds and tonal possibilities of the ensemble through this piece. Naturally, I landed on a fanfare and delved into the pageantry and regal quality of the instruments and form. The name “Morning Fanfare” was given after I revisited and revised the piece in 2023. The trumpets at the start of the piece are like the first beams of sunlight in the morning breaching the horizon and announcing the day. The light grows as the other instruments join in and the warmth of the sun increases and spreads. In the middle section, lingering fog and clouds from the night before obscure the light. The light grapples with the clouds, peaking through a few times, before fully breaking free and continuing its expansion and growth. Eventually, the sun has conquered the morning and the activity of life marches into the day. The piece ends with the sun’s resplendent majesty presiding over the day.
