Program Notes
I think fourths sound great in strings. This piece is kind of like a thumbnail sketch for a longer one. I wrote it in a couple hours on a slow afternoon (when I should have been doing other work lol). I like the energy of it, but it’s in this in-between place aesthetically. It doesn’t sound contemporary. I can’t think of any of my peers writing music that sounds like this. But it doesn’t really sound dated either—even though the Bartók/Martinů vibes are strong with this one... Idk 🤷🏻‍♂️ Good thing it’s not my job to play musicologist/critic. I just write the stuff. That said, I’m not sure who’d want to play a full-length version of this piece. Believe it or not, I started writing it thinking to myself, “I’m gonna write a piece for high school string orchestra.” Lol. As if. (That said, my HS director dig have us play a Karel Husa suite one year that was in this vein too, so you never know...) Anyway, hope you enjoyed!
