Program Notes
In a metaphorical way, the piece explores the concept of solastalgia created by Glenn Albrecht, which refers to the “distress that is produced by environmental change impacting on people while they are directly connected to their home environment.” As environmental issues become commonplace and irreversible, the Earth (our small cave in the universe) feels smaller and smaller. Safe places, where one could “escape to” and/or stay in, are becoming inexistent. Everything, and every part or the globe is aected by the environmental consequences of human actions. As a result, some of us experience a kind of homesickness while still being at home. With the use of spatialized fixed media, amplification, and live processing, the piece tries to create an environment where the entire space is occupied by sound, a cave of sound. At the same time, every sound is aected by and aects other ones. Like with the Earth, the room becomes smaller. Finally, the gradual accumulation of sounds towards the end of the piece tries to represent the impossibility of escaping, as well as the inevitability of living in a shared space.
