- Program Notes
- Nachtsplitter deals with the concept of REM and non-REM sleep, the differentiation between dreaming and not dreaming while sleeping. During a normal night both phases alternate multiple times, varying in length. In a similar manner, sections of energetic outbursts and section of calm pondering are placed side by side in this music, giving it a kind of fractured, uncompleted impression. While Nachtsplitter from 2009 is a linear composition, Nachtsplitter II for clarinet and piano breaks the composition into multiple small sections, each on a single sheet of paper, which can be played in any ordner, repeated or omitted. It is the performers task to create a working sequence and realize their own dreaming experience in playing the piece.
