- Etude I "in C" begins with two individual lines in counterpoint, comprised of 'white' notes and 'black' notes-- with the omission of the Bb clarinet's written 'C'. Both lines gradually converge into an intricate web of tone rows that also omit the written 'C'; that is, until the very end!
