Program Notes
This piece was written whilst in a wistful mood for the autumn season to come around. The heat of summers in my home are unbearable and a yearn for the cooler months washed over me every time I had to venture out into the brutal heat of summer. Every year in my hometown, the sign that autumn was coming was recognized—not by a reduction in temperature—but an increase in the winds. This piece aims to show that. The stirring winds carrying up the first melody in the baritone saxophone as it propagates throughout the piece, flowing between parts, and the piece ending with the falling of leaves through the usage of tremolos in the soprano and alto saxophones and cluster-like harmony. This ending to me (from m. 100) reminds me the most of the autumn season as the true visual of autumn sets in. The leaves turning lush reds and oranges and falling with the wind carrying them to an unknown destiny, much like how a new year sets the premise for a time to change.
