- merger, for 2 cellos, was commissioned in 2016 to celebrate the then- new partnership between Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music, as imagined in almost romantic terms. In an elaborate, abstract musical metaphor for the merger of two institutions, the two cellos share a number of interrelated melodic and harmonic ideas, attempting to mirror one another, but they tend to move at slightly different speeds, finding synchrony to be elusive. Underlying all of the music is a sublimated, cyclical polyrhythm which occasionally rises to the surface to provide moments of clarity. There is a kind of nervous energy throughout, but also an expressive warmth that springs from my own sense of affection for the Conservatory (where I taught for nearly 12 years). - CKH
