- “Vida en la Ciudad” (Life in the City) is an homage to my Latin heritage, utilizing common elements of Latin music such as habanera rhythm (three-against-two polyrhythm), tresillo rhythm (grouping of 3, 3, 2) and harmonic language, as well as thinking about my visit to Panama and the region where my family is from back in 2014. Each of the instrument families acts as little “districts” in this city. Percussion sets the scene by establishing a clave groove, solo calls from the trumpets and saxophones, and then an awoken trombone section bringing fiery flare that establishes the rest of the mood and character for the piece.
