Program Notes
Demonic Animal was completed in Summer 2021 and commissioned by Synaesthesis Ensemble. The clarinet us played with a synthetic ultra-thin reed designed by the composer. The piece is inspired by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's writings—particularly, the essay "Becoming Animal" from a much longer work entitled A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia. In this essay, the authors differentiate three different types of animals. The first type is the Oedipal animal, which is individualized and sentimentalized. The second type is the Jungian, or archetypal, animal, which has a symbolic presence in many human cultures' myths, rituals, and spiritual beliefs. The third type is the Demonic animal, which is unconscious, subtle, and fluid and operates on a micro level.
