- The image of the clouds obscuring the Swan Range on a cloudy day in the Flathead Valley of Montana. Beneath the clouds the wall of the mountains rising up with no end in sight gives a sense of being weighed down, almost trapped. From within the clouds, I imagine a sense of a loss of direction much like the loss of pitch as the guidepost giving a sense of direction in music. On top of the mountain, above the cloud, it is a sunny day, without the weight and entrapment below, walled in by the mountains and the clouds. Obscured Range was commissioned by the 2022 Impulse New Music Festival. It was premiered at the festival by Diana Wade.
