Xuanming (Dylan) Liu is a composer whose work integrates cultural memory, natural landscapes, and historical imagination into contemporary musical forms. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Composition at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University as a full scholarship recipient, studying with Hannah Kendall, Michael Hersch, and Du Yun.

His works have been performed internationally at venues such as Carnegie Hall and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MDW). Liu has collaborated with ensembles and performers including the Mivos Quartet, Trio Immersio, and with members of Klangforum Wien and the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). Festival appearances include the Zodiac Music Festival and Lake George Music Festival.

Liu’s music often explores the dialogue between tradition and modernity, informed by his fieldwork and artistic connections with Chinese ensembles such as the China National Traditional Orchestra, the Xinjiang Muqam Art Troupe, and Xi’an Drum Music (under the guidance of Fan Bingnan and Zhao Xiaomin). He has also undertaken ethnographic research in Sichuan’s Yi ethnic region, where he documented local folk practices that inform the melodic and structural dimensions of his compositions. His ongoing cycle, Sound Aggregates, explores a continuum between noise and tonality, conceived as a modern parallel to classical polarity systems.

In addition to his compositional activity, Liu has studied conducting with Harlan Parker and has worked closely with performers across chamber, orchestral, and interdisciplinary settings. His work is rooted in both the rigorous exploration of form and a poetic engagement with sonic material drawn from landscape, history, and cultural ritual.
