"Traditional"

Traditional is a chamber work for violin, violoncello and piano in which the notion of “tradition” is approached not as the citation of a fixed historical material, but as a field of transformation shaped by memory, gesture and timbral resonance. The work unfolds through a musical discourse constructed from the tension between dense, process-oriented textures and more linear, quasi-melodic formations whose contour occasionally alludes to modal behaviors associated with Turkish makam practice.

Rather than treating makam-derived materials as thematic objects, the work reconsiders certain aspects of improvisational taksim thinking—its flexible temporality, ornamental fluidity, and discontinuous formal logic—as structural principles. In this context, the piece develops through evolving gestural cells, recurrent transformations, and unstable sound layers whose relationships are determined less by conventional motivic development than by timbral and energetic interaction.

A central feature of the work lies in the coexistence of contrasting expressive states: highly concentrated, almost ritualistic passages are interrupted by volatile accumulations, abrupt fractures, and resonant aftermaths. Through this interplay, the music seeks a formal continuity not through linear progression, but through a constantly shifting equilibrium between reduction and proliferation.

As a result, the work proposes a perspective in which “traditional” material is not preserved as historical residue, but reimagined as an active compositional force—one capable of mediating between cultural memory, contemporary sonic thought, and a more open, unpredictable sense of musical form.
