Matthew Kurniawan (b. 2006) is an Indonesian composer and classical guitarist based in Lawrence, Kansas. His music blends traditional tonal styles with modern tastes, creating unique and accessible sounds for the audiences of today. Kurniawan has written orchestral, vocal/choral, chamber, and solo works that have been performed internationally in the United States, Malaysia, Brazil, and Iran, as well as film scores for film students that have been nominated for sound awards. His choral music has been performed by outstanding ensembles such as the University of Kansas Glee Club, Oread Singers, and the Central Washington University Chamber Choir. He currently studies composition at the University of Kansas with esteemed composers Ingrid Stölzel and Forrest Pierce, and for his music, Kurniawan has been awarded such honors as the 2024 Jack and Lavon Brosseau Creativity Awards for Diverse Media and the 2026 Eugene and Mary Mingle Scholarship Award for Composition. He has previously served as the 2025-2026 president of the University of Kansas Glee Club.
