The University of Alabama at Birmingham BrassWorks is a flexible faculty ensemble made up of a core brass trio (2 trumpets/flugelhorns and trombone) with with an additional member who performs on jazz piano/jazz alto. Members are: Dr. James Zingara and Dr. Steve Roberts, trumpets; Dr. Caleb Owenby, trombone; and Dr. Reginald Jackson, jazz piano/jazz saxophone.

This ensemble can perform in a broad spectrum of styles. We are issuing a call for works consisting of this particular instrumental combination, specifically:

If you are writing for the core ensemble (2 trumpets and trombone):
- Please keep pieces (or movements) to no more than 3-4 minutes.
- Please provide adequate rest opportunities
- Instruments: Trumpet 1:you may utilize piccolo, E-flat, C, B-flat, or flugelhorn
Trumpet 2: you may utilize C, B-flat or flugelhorn
Trombone: you may utilize tenor or bass trombones

If you are writing for the brass trio and jazz piano (or alto saxophone):
- Improvised solos should be limited to 2nd trumpet and jazz piano/alto
- Please write the jazz piano part with chord changes rather than written lines

This ensemble is planning on premiering the accepted works at regional and national conferences as well as possible touring performances in the coming year. Since school recruitment and pops concerts are a large part of our mission, lighter pieces and arrangements are welcome and encouraged. If accepted, composers will be sent program copies and recordings of the the premieres and subsequent performances.

Eligibility/Guidelines: Composers of any age and nationality may submit works with or without electronics. Submission deadline is October 15, 2026 with premiere performances targeted for spring 2027. Composers will be contacted by e-mail concerning acceptance by December 1.
