Program Notes
Instantaneous was composed using set theory, in which pitches are grouped together and transformed. The set class that is used in the first and third sections of this piece is a pentatonic scale (02479); this scale is inverted and transposed, forming different groups of pitches that are used to create all of the melodies and harmonies. In the middle section of this piece, the only set used to compose is {9t01357}, and this set is transposed six times, thus producing different groups of pitches to use. This piece was written to showcase both the technical capabilities of each instrument, and the texture created by these instruments coming together.
