- I got inspiration for "Road Trip to the Coast" after a Father's Day family trip. During the trip, we went to a number of places, including Tillamook, Garibaldi, and Cape Lookout, where we got to see many beautiful cities, environments, and beaches. The trip gave me a lot of time to reflect on some personal issues, while also creating some new memories for me to look back on.
I. Fields and Forests: The first movement is based around the views that I saw while we were driving down OR-22 W on our way to the Tillamook Creamery, from fields and crops to trees and forests. I tried to reflect these changes in scenery transitioning from fields to forest, by starting a bit ambiguous and open. Then, filling in the gaps until arriving at the flowing section of the score.
II. Seasick: The second movement, "Seasick," isn't directly about myself, but it is based on a funny story told by my mom involving a heavy case of seasickness whilst whale watching. While seasickness isn't always the best experience, I decided to make the movement a bit whimsical due to the context, while still keeping the feeling of seasickness by adding some up and down movement and odd meter.
III. A (Bitter) Sweet Treat: This last movement is based on two different stories during the trip; the first is when we went to the Tillamook Creamery to get some ice cream. Secondly, about the drive back home, and how even such nice trips as these have to come to an end. It is good to look back and reflect on such nice and fun memories once in a while and think about how they impacted you.
