More Than This

More Than This is a short, uplifting, and energetic work intended to serve as either a concert opener or closer. The piece is inspired by Patrick Ness’s novel of the same title, which explores themes of love, loss, friendship, and the search for meaning within the everyday rhythms of life. Early in the novel, the protagonist, Seth, poses a poignant question: “Haven’t you ever felt like there has to be more? Like there’s more out there somewhere, just beyond your grasp?”  

As the story unfolds, we come to understand Seth’s struggles and growth, but most importantly, the deep connections he shares with his friends. By the novel’s end, the author returns to that essential, deeply human question—is there more? Seth ultimately answers with a resounding yes, crediting his friends for revealing just how much love and light life can hold.  

This sparkling work for wind ensemble seeks to capture that warmth, joy, and sense of possibility found in meaningful friendship. I dedicate More Than This to my own friends and family, who have shown me that, indeed, there is more.
