About the Open Call
Applications are now open for our Virtual Residency (Fall 2026) and our NYC Residency (Spring 2027), both of which will explore the theme through critical inquiry and making, supported by funding, mentorship, and access to tools and expertise from Eyebeam's network.
Eyebeam is inviting artists to explore questions of agency at a moment when AI systems are increasingly acting, making decisions, and carrying out tasks on our behalf. How do we preserve human agency as these systems become more capable of shaping human behavior? How do we assert agency in imagining and building the societies we inhabit? And how might our understanding change if we think about agency as collective, relational, entangled, and more-than-human?
Projects might engage AI directly, but they don’t have to. We welcome critical and creative approaches to questions of power, autonomy, technological systems, collective action, human and nonhuman relationships, and the social and material structures through which agency is exercised.
Projects might explore:
• Who has agency? Who acts? And who is acted upon?
• What does agency become once it no longer belongs to a single actor (human or machine)?
• How to reimagine AI systems through the lens of collective governance, repair, rehearsal or mischief
• How to repurpose AI systems toward new tools, methods, and models for the public good
